When In Search For A Podiatric Surgeon Austin Is The Way To Go

By Ina Hunt

Podiatrist surgeon refers to a medical professional with specialization in studying and medically treating disorders affecting feet, ankles, and the lower extremities. Podiatry is the branch of medicine they operate within. In the US, usage of the term podiatry began during the 19th century and it is now in use all over the world. For all US citizens in need for a skilled podiatric surgeon Austin should be the first place to give priority in a search operation.

Podiatric surgery is a subspecialty in podiatry that deals with use of surgical procedures to treat feet, ankles, and lower extremity structures. Proper functioning of feet and regions around the ankles is the goal emphasized in this specialty. People suffering from joint and ligament conditions have a broad range of surgical treatment options to pick from. Professionals in this field can specialize in either full reconstruction or minimally invasive surgery.

The functions of these specialists are many and they may vary from one state to another. Some of them include performing full physical examinations and medical histories, performing surgeries, prescription of medications, provision of advice, and treatment of sports-related injuries. Other responsibilities include taking and interpreting X-rays and related imaging studies and ordering and performing physical therapies. They also prescribe and fit insoles, orthotics, and custom-made shoes.

People who hope to become podiatric surgeons must start specializing at college or university level before getting into podiatric schools or beyond. College or university courses relevant to this field include human anatomy, pathophysiology, physiology, general medicine, surgery, sociological and psychological perspectives, and pharmacology among others. Further education is required after university education. Education in school that train podiatry normally takes another four years.

Courses covered during the first year in podiatric medical schools are the same to those covered by M. D and D. O students. There is however a little emphasis on ankle, foot, and lower extremity. Taking and passing a Medical College Admission Test may be required to gain admission. Only successful candidates gain admission but having outstanding co-curricular capabilities may be advantageous.

The four years one takes in the school come before surgical based residency. Surgical based residency equips candidates with a lot of skills in medicine and surgery because it is highly hands-on. There are two forms of the residency and one lasts two years whereas the other one lasts three. Both residencies cover areas such as internal medicine, plastic surgery, emergency medicine, dermatology, infectious disease, vascular surgery, physical medicine, orthopedic surgery, and podiatric medicine and surgery.

After successfully completing residency program, there are many boards in the US that one can decide to seek certification from. There are 2 main options people go for after being certified, the first one is seeking employment and the second one is venturing into private sector. Further training and a lot of experience is required before one can qualify to become a surgeon in this field.

This field has two main surgical certifications, that is, foot surgery and reconstructive rearfoot surgery. One must gain certification in foot surgery before seeking certification in reconstructive rear-foot. In most cases, certification requires passing oral and computer exams on clinical simulation, written exams and providing surgical logs to show experience and variety.
